In 1997, while circumnavigating the globe on a voyage with Semester at Sea, Marie wrote and recorded an album entitled The Underworld. The songs were recorded in her cabin, and the instruments used were Marie's voice and acoustic guitar, the ship's acoustic piano, a live recording of birds from a park in Kyoto and the creaking of the ship as it rocked. The only recording equipment used was a "primitive" 4-track sound recorder, bought in Osaka, and a SONY microphone, brought from home. All the songs were written, performed, produced, and recorded by Marie Beer.

The recordings have recently been transformed into a CD complete with pictures and lyrics inspired from the trip.
